The text: ‘I smelled something delicious in the air’

My brain: WAS IT BACON?

🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, I’m excited for this book and very impressed by your research process and painting skills! And I’m sure no pigs were harmed in the making of this book.

LOL Guiltily raising my hand--I had the same thought! To be fair, I watched Beryl Shereshewsky's bacon recipes episode last night on YouTube, so it wasn't JUST the combination of pigs and "delicious smell"!

I adore Shaun Tan, I adore your high school graphite series (like seriously OMG!!!) and I adore this!!

Also, I remember getting a note from a copyeditor once to make sure I clarified that the waterbottle my character was using on her road trip was a reusable waterbottle. The most crucial things, right?

Do I think it's amazing/commendable or a little scary that a children's imprint includes helmet safety "per house style"? (Isn't that the most GenX response in the world? I'm revealing my age!) I'm going to fall on the side of commendable, because you KNOW it's always going to come up in critical reviews and you might as well have it "on the syllabus" as it were.

Same--it reminds me a little of Catalan Modernisme of the turn of the 20th century (as opposed to "Modernism" of slightly later) and Friedensreich Hundertwasser in Vienna (who was also influenced by Gaudi, who was probably the most famous "Modernista"). There's a lovely YouTube channel called "Magical Modernist Mansion" by a couple restoring a Modernista townhouse near Barcelona--I love learning about that movement and time, and seeing the other examples that they show in their travels around Spain.

Yes you are doing it right because you are doing it. Well done keep up the illustrating. Remember it is your art and your perspective.

Thank you so much for sharing your process. The spread looks adorable and reminds me of Richard Scarry. I am not an artist so this may or may not make sense to you. For years I have been imagining how I could I ever do a spread showing a small town and all the teeming crowds that I see. I am from Delhi and I didn’t know where to begin. Now I know!

I love the research and mostly that you end up seeing the Bolivian architect buildings (I was born in La Paz :').
