I've always wondered bout this special soup too, some Chinese Malaysians took them too, as I learned when, i asked "why are you so tall?". Your sister did not take any? :)
What a lovely thing that you got your mom to share her story with you.
somehow I imagined her calling your grandma at night “we have a problem!”, and when grandma arrived you would be stuck in your room as you would be giant. Then grandma would say “I see Ill have to do a new dress then” and just calmly leave
Aww, I love the update with your mom’s memories of the time. Fellow taller than average Asian girl with disproportionately small hands and feet checking in! 🫡
I am also a taller than (the Asian) average Taiwanese girl so this was so relatable! And I also drank 轉骨湯 growing up but I actually quite enjoyed the taste (maybe it was some form of stockholm syndrome.) But the way you illustrated and described the soup brought back so much nostalgia for me. My younger brother was also forced to drink it after it worked(?) for me but he hated the taste. 中藥isn't for everyone lol. Anyway, love your work Lian :))
so cute! I'm jealous, I'm only 5'0 and wish I had some of that soup... Now I'm really curious what's really in it and if it might really be Jägermeister haha
A similar thing my mom used to do was make me eat fish eyeballs to improve my eyesight, but it didn't work unfortunately 😅
Glad you shared this again, as a newbie I had indeed not seen it and it’s fab. I was always the tall one in the class at school and forever being told to slouch because other people couldn’t see, then also being told to sit up straight by teachers, I mean talk about mixed messages!

My sister didn't!! That's why my mum is convinced it's because of bone growing soup haha

My mom would make us hang on the monkey bars as at the playground much as possible to get our bones...to stretch? Lolol
I’m still short though...
